There was a time when the idea of hiring a company to perform some experimental procedures was unheard of in academic research circles. Now the use of contract research organizations (CROs) is becoming more and more routine as a way to increase time and cost efficiency of academic research. There are CROs doing behavioral and histochemical assays, tissue culture experiments and generating made-to-order organisms.
This thread is discussing pre-clinical tests for neuroprotective therapeutics: which of these are best left to specialized CROs?
Is there a negative impact on post-doctoral training from moving certain basic science operations, such as genetically modified mouse making, out of academia and into industry?
