Serotonin-Based Approaches

While the standard serotonin-based therapies (SSRIs, SNRIs) are commonly used for mood and anxiety disorders that can manifest with PD as well as other diseases, the effectiveness of these treatments in PD remains unknown. A multi-site clinical trial, SAD-PD, is underway to determine the most effective treatments for PD-depression. The serotonin system has also been investigated as a target for treatment of side effects such as the dyskinesia that can result from dopamine replacement therapies (Carta et al., 2007).
