GABA
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter of the brain, and participates in the motor circuits of the basal ganglia by inhibiting dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. GABA signaling is essential for the selection and initiation of movement and for learning habits and skills. GABA also modulates the release of glutamate, which is involved in excitotoxicity.
