The Business of Science
Creating a new therapy for Parkinson’s disease relies on more than just science. Unless a commercial case can be made to support the development of a therapy, it is unlikely that researchers will get the financial support required to move a candidate through preclinical research into clinical testing. This means that therapeutic development is as much about creating market value as it is about creating a new drug. To translate a new PD therapy from the bench to the clinic, researchers need to consider the importance and how-to’s surrounding intellectual property and seeking financial support, among others. Strong industry engagement in PD is also crucial to development, testing and manufacturing of a new PD therapeutic.
