Acetylcholine
Model of the Acetylcholine ReceptorCredit: Richard Law and Andrew McCammon, UCSD Courtesy: National Science FoundationThe dopamine system is strongly linked to the cholinergic system. Dopamine and acetylcholine are normally in a state of homeostatic balance in the basal ganglia. Dopamine depletion, as seen in PD, produces a state of cholinergic sensitivity and a syndrome of basal ganglia pathophysiology that is profoundly disruptive to motor function.
