Dopamine and acetylcholine are normally in a state of homeostatic balance in the basal ganglia. Dopamine depletion, as seen in PD, produces a state of cholinergic sensitivity and a syndrome of basal ganglia pathophysiology that is profoundly disruptive to motor function.
